Welcome to Wingham Public School

Frank StrettonWingham Public School , ‘Home of the Tigers,’ belongs to the Avon Maitland District School Board. It is a Full Service Public Elementary School providing educational programming for students from Early Years (Junior Kindergarten) to Grade 8 for the town of Wingham as well as Special Education services to students from the region of Northern Huron County. "Tyson the Tiger" is our school mascot. We are a "Nut Sensitive" school that embraces the healthy schools initiative involving daily Physical Education classes for all students as well as a daily snack program called Tyson's Treats. . We are also a “Green School” that supports and enforces reducing, reusing and recycling and energy conservation.

Our students have the benefit of excellent staff who, in addition to their classroom expertise, also provide a number of extra-curricular sports and clubs. We have the added support of many outside agencies such as physiotherapists, speech and language, occupational therapists through CCAC as well as liaisons with many other outside agencies: Wingham Police, CPRI, Thames Valley Children's Centre and many local businesses and service clubs.

Wingham Public School has a small yet dynamic School Council and Volunteer Program. These individuals contribute immeasurably to our school through their ongoing support to program (TRIP - primary reading program, Tyson Treats, library helpers), parent education and fund-raising activities. Our student body appreciates their support and benefits from both their ongoing time and commitment. We welcome new members.

Our School Goals are:
To improve student achievement in all areas of student learning, with a focus on literacy and numeracy.
To develop positive citizenship qualities in our students.
To engage our community as partners in public education.
To use Board resources efficiently and effectively.
To be an Environmentally Conscious and Active School Community

To meet these goals:
Wingham Public School believes in a safe and non-threatening teaching and learning environment for all staff and students. With this philosophy at heart, we have developed the Wingham Public School Behaviour Management Plan, have implemented the Virtues Program school wide, as well as the Second Step program from JK to Grade 8. These programs teach citizenship, social skills and clearly define school rules, and student responsibilities.

Wingham Public School also supports a strong Peacemaker and Circle of Friends program. Over the past few years, we have hosted several bully prevention presentations for students and completed staff training on school discipline with Ron Morrish and Jane Hoy. This fall through our School Council we will continue our work on developing and implementing a North Region Community Safe Schools and Character Education Committee who will help broaden the introduction of the Districts 10 character attributes into our community.
Wingham Public School has been involved in the District Literacy Projects in all divisions - primary, junior, and intermediate. Over the past years we have received wonderful support from Ministry grants, District grants, Wescast Industries, The Foundation for Enriching Students - Huron - Perth, and School Council for purchasing new resources. We will continue to work on obtaining the necessary resources for our students. Our goal in numeracy and literacy also advocates ongoing staff training (e.g. teaching strategies, assessment, using new resources), in order to assist students in learning more successful reading and writing strategies.

Wingham Public School has been working on the environmental goals of energy reduction and inplementing the 3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle. We share environmental messages through our school newsletters, and teach students environmental issues through curriculum with the support of our local community agencies such as Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation, Ministry of Natural Resources, World Wildlife Foundation, Westario Power and the Dearness Conservation Program, etc. Our children benefit from working with conservation staff at the Wingham Ecological Park and Wawanosh Nature Centre, support Community In Blooms, as well as benefit from hearing many guest speakers on current issues.

Wingham Public School ’s ultimate aim is to develop each student to the fullest of his/her potential academically, socially and emotionally. We believe that an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust among staff, parents, students and community is essential. Our students are taught how to assume responsibility for their decisions, actions and learning. We greatly appreciate the strong team approach shared between home and school in our community.
